The 'Memorial" Christmas Memory Tree

I recently wrote this article on our website: www.MaudeDexter.com under our 'Articles' category, and thought we would share it here with you also, as it may be something you would like to try this holiday season as a new tradition:

A couple of years ago in December, Amy was thinking about our great grandfather, Duncan Alexander Cattanach (husband of our great grandma Maude Dexter), and she was saddened at his tragic murder that had taken place April 20, 1912, and how his legacy had been forgotten. Though he had been killed many years before my daughter Amy was born, Amy always felt a special closeness to him.

She began writing letters to the town he had been murdered in, and had received copies of old newspaper articles about his death. It made her feel very sad, yet very close to him. She had wished that he was here to celebrate Christmas with us, as well his parents and our Grandma Maude. This weighed heavily on Amy's mind.

One day in December two years ago, I found her in the kitchen with a box of clear glass ornaments, copies of our great grandfather's photo and of his parents and of Grandma Maude, as well glue, glitter and scissors.

She turned to me with the happiest expression on her face, and held up the ornament that had our great grandfather's photo on it. It was beautiful!

She took all of the family photos and had decopauged them onto all of the glass ornaments, and hung them on the pine bows that spriraled around our banister.

It was so breathtaking, and such a loving tribute to our family that had passed away long before we had been able to meet them, and it was a way to honor them at Christmas time and to have them with us.

Last year Amy made one with my mother's beautiful image, who had passed away 14 years ago, and one for our cousin Clifford, who has been missing in action from the Korean War.

It is a tradition that we will keep with us every year. This year Amy will be adding ornaments with the images of our beloved little Scottie dogs who have passed away over the years.

This is a tradition you may be interested in doing also...it is such a loving tribute, and it such a beautiful way to honor the memories of our loved ones, no matter how long ago they passed.

May God bless you and yours this Christmas season.

Our Newest Additions to Maude Dexter

Without having internet access for over a week, it gave us a lot more time to get creative in the Maude Dexter home studio! I never thought that we would feel so cut off from everything without being on the internet for a few days, but those days seemed like a month! Boy were we glad when our computer actually stayed online!

Here is one of our latest additions on the Maude Dexter website:

Is It Just Us?

Wow! Can you believe it? We lost internet access for well over a week due to a faulty wireless card for our internet access. Have any of you ever had that happen? We spent so much time at the office where the device came from (5 out of 7 days) that they were going to give us a name tag :)

Welcome to Maude Dexter Romantic Home Decor

Hi Everyone!

We want to Thank You for joining us here. We have a beautiful website featuring our own line of romantic home decor items that we design and create exclusively in our Maude Dexter home studio.

Maude Dexter was our great grandmother, and she was the first granddaughter of N.G.B. Dexter, who founded Dexter Yarn Company in Pawtucket, RI in 1820. Dexter Yarn Company was the largest producer of knitting/crochet/embroidery cottons, and between 1917-1920 produced the most feminine and romantic crochet patterns available, which you can also purchase from our Maude Dexter website in the form of our republished editions.

Grandma Maude though born into a life of priviledge, lived a very hard life. Her husband, our great grandfather, Duncan A. Cattanach, was a graduate of Brown University with a degree in business. He contracted tuberculosis, and relocated grandma Maude and their 4 children to Pueblo, CO for the air quality. He was a sheriff, and agent for Pueblo Union Depot. After filling in for a friend on the night of April 20, 1912, one of the foggiest nights in Pueblo, CO history, he was brutally murdered while walking home from work. He was taken to St. Mary's hospital. Because the night was so foggy, our grandma Maude and their children could not find their way to the hospital before Grandpa Duncan passed away.

After our great grandfather's murder, their daughter, Donalina, was tragically killed, and within 3 years of our grandfather's death, grandma Maude developed breast cancer and passed away. Another 3 years later, their son Donald and his wife Bessie were both killed in the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus train disaster in 1918.

Our tribute to our grandma Maude is our beautiful website, and by designing and creating beautiful home decor accents that resemble a bygone era when everything was full of romance and roses.

Please be sure to join us here on our blog, and we would appreciate you shopping with us on our website as well.

Our website also features Grandma Maude's special Christmas recipes that are free for you to use
